Don Kitt was born and raised in Kenora – a small town in North-Western Ontario.  As a child he spent a lot of time in the woods enjoying and observing nature.  His natural talent for art translated to drawings of his love of nature, mythology and history.  As a teenager, he put aside his love of art and traveled whenever he could.  His trips often took him to BC and at the age of twenty he made BC his permanent home moving to Kamloops soon after.
Don started working with stained glass, pen and ink drawings, and clay creations in his spare time when his children were young.  Although he enjoyed expressing his artistry through those forms, he discovered a true love for carving on a trip to the Stein Valley in 1995.  The beauty, history, and energy of the area gave him boundless ideas for wood creations.

He originally used recovered and weathered old wood from shores and lakes around the Kamloops area.  The recovered wood made their way home with Don, filling the corners and shelves of his home – waiting patiently for him to carve his vision for them.  His first carvings took the shape of unique walking sticks or wall-hangings, each with animals intricately relief-carved in them.

Don then expanded his high relief-carving skills on a professional level. His participation in the carving of the doors at the Quaaout Lodge in Chase, BC honed his skills.

Most recently, Don lets the art form choose the type of wood he uses.  He expresses his ideas first on paper, letting him envision the wood that best suits it.  With wood and drawing in hand, the transformation from idea to completed carving begins.

His fascination with history, animals, mythical creatures, and the outdoors is captured in the various forms of artwork that Don creates.  His carvings often use symbolism from many different cultures.  No matter what wood Don uses, or what focus it takes, one thing is consistent with his artwork and that is his attention to detail.  Dons intricate study and research into the figure he is carving is translated back to the wood and into a truly unique art form.
